The Simple Rule

Never risk more than 1% of your trading capital on any single trade.

This rule sounds basic. It's also the single most important risk management principle that separates professionals from amateurs.

Why 1%?

At 1% risk per trade:

  • You can lose 10 trades in a row and still have 90% of your capital
  • You can lose 50 trades in a row and still have 60% of your capital
  • You have time to learn, adjust, and recover

At 10% risk per trade:

  • 5 consecutive losses = 41% drawdown
  • 10 consecutive losses = 65% drawdown (nearly impossible to recover)

How To Implement

1. Determine account size 2. Calculate 1% of account = maximum risk per trade 3. Set stop loss based on market structure 4. Size position so that stop loss = 1% of account
